MUMBAI, 6 December 2006 — Finally, police in Maharashtra will no longer have to send evidence or go to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad or Chandigarh to do scientific tests, as the best forensic lab in the country has started functioning in Mumbai.

Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister R.R. Patil who inaugurated the new lab, said that the lab would now house laboratories for all procedures required under forensic science.

The new state-of-the-art forensic lab situated in a five-story building, will have facilities such as the narco-analysis test, polygraph, brain mapping, cyber forensic, tape authentication, speaker and voice identification, firing gallery and forensic clinical toxicology.

Patil said that keeping in mind the growing threat of terrorism in the state, a package of rupees 100 million was approved for refurbishing the forensic laboratory. “I’m proud that the facility has started in Mumbai, which should have happened earlier, but it’s better late than never,” Patil said.

This new lab at suburban Kalina, as part of the upgrade, will have experts trained at national-level institutes. Eight experts have been hired to carry out new tests.
