RIYADH, 18 December 2006 — Health Minister Dr. Hamad Al-Manie launched the first toll-free phone service to assist people to receive health information in their homes and workplaces. “This is the first such service in the Kingdom and it will take health service to the doorstep,” Dr. Manie said.
He estimated that some 1,500 calls would be made every day to the toll free number: 8002494444. There are 10 lines operating round the clock including public holidays.
“The purpose of the program is to create health awareness at all levels of society and this program will reach those who may be reluctant to visit clinics.”
The minister said the new service would save time and would also reduce pressure on medical clinics. The ministry has a team of eight specialized women doctors to reply to queries on health issues. The panel is composed of doctors, pharmacists, nutritionists and trained health personnel who can deal with virtually any health-related question.
“Patients who need medical advice on hypertension, diabetes, cardiac problems, infectious diseases, tuberculosis, obesity and problems affecting their health can ask the panel of physicians,” a spokeswoman from the Call Center of the Health Ministry said.
She said the program had been launched to coincide with the Haj so that the pilgrims could also avail themselves of the service. The doctors will also answer questions on Haj-related health matters such as sun stroke, food poisoning, indigestion and flu. “The location, telephone numbers and services available at hospitals and medical clinics within the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah will be provided by this service,” she said.
Pilgrims who are suffering from chronic maladies such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiac, lung and renal diseases have been told to follow medical advice strictly, she said, pointing out that the pilgrims should be mindful of their food and also avoid congestion. “Pilgrims should abstain from eating food prepared on the wayside and look after their personal hygiene when they are in such large groups,” she added.
