Jeddah Students Shine in Science Competitions

JEDDAH, 22 December 2006 — The Jeddah Science Innovation Club (JSIC) has announced distinguished achievements in two competition categories held recently in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

At the computer science competition held across the Kingdom, the work of six student members of the club got an advanced place among 18 entries. The second award was clinched at the 3rd Arab Olympic for Chemistry competition held in Kuwait in which club member Safwan Osama Tayeb was placed third, bringing home the bronze medal.

Two other members of the club, Mazen Basaif and Al-Bara’s Zamzam of Al-Thagher School at Makkah Road, shared the first place in website designing at the secondary schools level, said Abdullah ibn Ali Al-Saywed, deputy director of students activity department and general supervisor of JSIC. Ibrahim Balubaid of Jail Al-Faysal school ranked third in the category.

At the preparatory schools level, Ahmed Talal Al-Harbi of Al-Aqsa Preparatory school and Abdullah Al-Mezjaji of Prince Sultan Preparatory School ranked first and second in computer programming.

At the elementary schools level, Moaz Abdullah Al-Qahtani of Jail Al-Faysal school ranked second in multimedia interactive displays.

The JSIC recently organized a scientific forum for creative preparatory school students under the slogan “Day of Creativity” in recognition of the importance of raising the scientific level of the students as well as motivation and familiarization with thinking, innovation and practical application through trial and experimentation and diligent achievement.

Thirty-two schools of the Makkah Education Directorate participated in the forum for students at the preparatory schools, thus reflecting the keenness in generating interest in research and innovation among students.

Turki ibn Moammar, director of PR and social programs at Modern Industries Company (Tide), the founder of JSIC, said that the project to establish the club was in keeping with the role expected of the corporate sector in the development of the community they belong to and the welfare of its members. “The advanced positions achieved in chemistry and computer competitions show the strong efforts extended by the club and its management to achieve the goals.”
