QUNFUDAH, 28 January 2007 — A Civil Defense rescue team on Thursday saved a family that had lost its way in the desert while picnicking. Mild weather and a recent rainfall encouraged the family to take an off-the-beaten path back from performing Umrah. But they eventually got lost in the desert. The head of the family called for help using his mobile phone. It took a rescue team well into the night to find the vehicle, which was 58 kilometers into the desert outside of Qunfudah.
Indoor Generator Kills Yemeni Couple
KHAMIS MUSHAYT, 28 January 2007 — A Yemeni couple died from carbon monoxide poisoning after running a gas generator to power a heating unit indoors. A 55-year-old woman was found dead after relatives called police when they couple failed to answer the telephone. Her 54-year-old husband died after being taken to an emergency room. Deaths due to carbon monoxide, and odorless gas that is a byproduct of gas-powered engines, increase in the winter months in the countryside when people use gas-powered generators indoors to power heating units.
KAU to Host Deans’ Conference
JEDDAH, 28 January 2007 — King Abdulaziz University (KAU) will host on Wednesday a meeting of deans of the social service and continuing education departments of all Saudi universities. The meeting takes place every semester to discuss issues such as supporting the Human Resources Fund and cooperation with the Ministry of Civil Service in arranging training programs.
