JEDDAH, 17 February 2007 — A high school student in the Eastern city of Hafr Al-Baten was recently fined SR2,000 and sentenced to 60 lashes for painting crude and vulgar graffiti on the walls of his school, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. Meanwhile, Jeddah city officials recently inaugurated a project to encourage street art by designating a wall in Briman district for kids to go wild with paint and a 60-meter canvas provided by the municipality. More walls are in the works. Needless to say, Jeddah municipal officials aren’t likely to tolerate vulgar graffiti.
