JEDDAH, 8 July 2007 — Summer programs for children and families are under way in several shopping malls across Jeddah and elsewhere in the Kingdom. Their senior officials have underscored the colossal role played by such programs with varied activities that attract large numbers of children and families with their ample space, climate controlled interiors and environment-friendly play areas.

“Such programs that include face painting, magic shows and other forms of entertainment, and prizes have been attracting large numbers of children accompanying their parents for shopping,” Helmi Ashour, marketing consultant and board deputy at Alandalus Development and Marketing Company that manages the Roshana Mall on Tahlia Street, told Arab News over the weekend.

“We daily distribute SR10,000 to SR20,000 worth of gift coupons, each valued at SR200, to children and shoppers at the mall, and even outside the mall and in housing compounds and at Jungle Land,” Ashour said.

“These coupons entitle free shopping in any of the mall’s outlets,” said Hilal Kalawi, general manager of Roshana Mall. “Sometimes, we surprise the shoppers with such coupons when they come out of the outlets after making their purchases,” he added. “Summer programs at our mall and other malls have effectively contributed to promoting Jeddah as a leading summer tourist destination in the Kingdom and also in the region,” Ashour said.

The mall was crowded with families for its summer activities, with children running around with their faces painted in varied colors and designs. There was also a magic show that kept the children spellbound. This summer the mall has great attractions including interesting entertainment programs and competitions with skits and plays for children. “We also bring cartoon characters for children’s entertainment,” Kalawi said.

“Summer programs offer one-of-a-kind family-oriented entertainment appealing to all ages and categories, especially children,” said a senior executive at Serafi Megamall.

Jeddah witnesses new and innovative shopping malls opening every year, a fact that bolsters the city’s unique position in the region as far as retail trade is concerned, he added.
