JEDDAH, 13 March 2007 — Saudi cyclist Mohammed Abdullah won the 28-km individual time trial silver medal in the Men’s and 9th Youth Gulf Cycling Championships in Abha yesterday.
Abdullah negotiated the distance in 40:51 to finish second in the youth division to Bahrain’s Sayed Hamza who clinched the gold medal with a time of 40:18. The bronze medal went to UAE’s Hamdan Shambeah who was also clocked 40:51 in a photo finish with the Saudi cyclist. The silver medal brought to four the number of medals won by Saudi Arabia since the competition started. On Sunday, Bader Al-Yassin, Ahmed Aseeri, Fahad Khabrani and Sultan Aseeri gave Saudi Arabia the silver medal in the youth 68-km men’s team trial event. The Saudis also claimed the bronze in the 36-km time trial in the youth group. Their gold medal came in the 65-km race against the clock in the youth division on Saturday.
Ahli Handball Team Triumph
JEDDAH — Kingdom’s Al-Ahli team beat Muscat of Oman 29-22 for their third straight victory yesterday in the 27th Gulf Handball Championship for Clubs in Bahrain. The win followed Ahli’s opening 33-31 win against Al-Qadisiya of Kuwait last week and 16-14 triumph over Ahli of Bahrain on Saturday. The win put Ahli on top of Group A and guaranteed their berth in the semifinal where they will take on the second qualifier from Group B.
Riyadh to Host Athletic Meet
JEDDAH — The Saudi Athletics Federation Cup for youth will be held this weekend at the Prince Faisal ibn Fahd Stadium in Riyadh. Twenty clubs are vying in the competition namely Al-Watani, Al-Sogour, Al-Safa, Al-Khaleej, Mudar, Al-Jubail, Damk, Al-Nakheel, Al-Ittihad, Okaz, Al-Ahli, Al-Sawab, Al-Adalah, Al-Tarf, Al-Hilal, Al-Majzal, Al-Sharq, Najran, Radwa and Arar. Events on tap during the two-day championship are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 3000m hurdles, 10, 000m, 100mx4 relay, 400mx4 relay, pole vault, high jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin throw, hammer throw, shot put and discus throw. Meanwhile, the Prince Naif ibn Abdulaziz Tournament for security divisions ends today in Al-Qatif Province. According to Brigadier Mohammed Al-Qarni, deputy-president of the Saudi Sport Federation for the Internal Security Forces, sport plays an important in the physical and mental well-being of security forces personnel.
Billiards Team Named
JEDDAH — The Saudi Billiards and Snooker Committee announced the team lineup for the 6th Men’s and 1st Youth Arab Championship to be held in Jeddah from March 27 to April 15 under the patronage of Prince Sultan ibn Fahd, president of the Saudi Youth Welfare. To banner the men’s squad are Naif Al-Jawini, Yousif Al-Wadi, Faisal Al-Fahad, Bandar Al-Dumaikhi, Halmi Seif, Essam Al-Mulla, Adel Al-Shammari, Anas Al-Malki, Mohammed Al-Hazmi, Fahd Al-Hujaili, Mohammed Al-Harthi, Khalid Idrees and Badr Al-Hamdan. Making up the youth team are Ahmed Adnan, Nithal Al-Baghshi and Mohammed Bayyad. Fifteen countries are participating in this event namely Jordan, UAE, Bahrain, Algeria, Syria, Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen, Palestine, Libya, Sudan and hosts Saudi Arabia.
Cross-Country Race
JEDDAH — A 5km cross-country race is set for Thursday in Makkah from 5 p.m. Al-Eman Charity Society is organizing the run for a cause event with the theme “Together Against Smoking.” The society is inviting as many participants as possible. To supervise the race are Saudi athlete Hassan Al-Asmri and international referee Yaslam Al-Muwalad.
