HURAIMILAA, 16 March 2007 — A 25-year-old man has been arrested here on charges of fatally slitting his nine-year-old brother’s throat as the boy was leaving school, local newspapers reported yesterday. The motive for the attack is unknown, but authorities say the murder suspect appears to have severe mental problems. The students and teachers of this small Saudi town went to the home of the boy’s family to console them on their tragedy.

Don’t Drive Recklessly in Al-Rass, Says Judge

AL-RASS — Responding to the growing unrest over Saudi youths who drive recklessly for fun, a judge here sentenced a so-called joyrider to two years in prison and 70 public lashes to be administered where the young man was arrested for his reckless recreation, local papers reported yesterday. The man’s vehicle was also confiscated by the state. Although no accident or injury ensued because of the activity, the local traffic department has started a get-tough policy on the practice of racing and stunt driving on Saudi road by local youths.

Suspect Caught in Police Car Shooting

MAKKAH — A search ended for a man who took a random shot at a police car parked at a checkpoint, local media reported yesterday. A suspect was arrested for the incident after local authorities issued a circular searching for the man accused of shooting at a police car for no apparent reason.

Three Injured in Fire at Medical Center

MADINAH — Three clinic employees were admitted to a local hospital here for severe smoke inhalation after a fire broke out where they worked, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. The cause of the fire at the local clinic was attributed to an accumulation of paper waste at the clinic. Civil Defense forces extinguished the flames.
