BHOPAL, 30 March 2007 — The quick ouster of the Indian cricket team from the World Cup Cricket in the West Indies, may have prompted diehard Indian fans at home to take to the streets and protest against their favorite stars but the betting business remained unaffected by the shameful defeat of the star-studded Indian team.

While bookies are still busy making money, Indian police are under intense pressure to crackdown on the betting trade.

Indore, the commercial capital of central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, appears to be the main betting center during this World Cup.

According to sources, police acting on a tip-off on Saturday night, busted a betting racket in Indore in Chattrapati Nagar district. Four people were arrested and cash amounting to Rs.46,000, betting slips amounting to hundreds of thousands of rupees and six mobile phones were also seized during the raid.

“We have four people in custody and they are being interrogated to ascertain their link with bigger bookies,” said a police official.

Earlier, Indore police arrested 2 people in a separate raid and recovered betting slips worth Rs.300,000, mobile phones and a portable TV.
