ISLAMABAD, 15 April 2007 — Former Chief Minister of Sindh Abdullah Shah died of cancer in a hospital in Karachi yesterday. Abdullah Shah was a member of Pakistan Peoples Party.

He was first elected to the Senate in 1988. In 1993, he became chief minister of Sindh with the blessings of PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

After the assassination of Benazir’s brother Murtaza Bhutto in 1996, Abdullah Shah mysteriously disappeared and lived mostly in Germany. He was lately pardoned by current Chief Minister of Sindh Arbab Ghulam Rahim and was allowed to return to Pakistan.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, at least 15 people were killed and nine others injured yesterday when a bus skidded off a road in northern Pakistan, officials said.

The bus plunged into a deep ravine in Sazin Valley, 60 km southwest of Gilgit, local official Abdul Hameed said.

The bus was traveling on the Karakoram Highway, a rough, winding road through the mountains of northern Pakistan, and the accident occurred at a sharp bend.
