DUBAI, 30 April 2007 — Police have arrested three members of a gang who robbed a jewelry store in a popular mall in Dubai on April 15. The total value of the stolen jewelry, which was recovered from a car in the UAE on Saturday, was AED14.8 million ($4 million), according to police.
Police did not disclose the nationality or names of the arrested suspects.
Dubai Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dhahi Khalfan Tamim said that the police had retrieved the stolen diamonds after arresting two of the robbers. “The diamonds have been returned to their owners. We have arrested two of the robbers here in Dubai and the third member of the gang was arrested in a European country following a formal arrest warrant issued by the Dubai police to the concerned authorities in that country,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
“Arrangements are continuing to ensure the third robber’s extradition to the UAE to stand trial,” the police chief said. “The robbers, who were part of an international gang, used a plastic gun during the robbery,” he said. The thieves used two stolen cars to ram through one of the main glass gates of Wafi City Mall and drove down the wide aisles of the shopping center to the jewelry store.
