RIYADH, 12 June 2007 — The Second Philippine International School (SPIS) was imbued with idealism and vision when it opened its doors to children of Overseas Filipiuno Workers (OFWs) in the Saudi capital in 1999.

It wanted to dish out quality education in serving the schoolchildren of OFWs. That was its mission. Seven years later, SPIS has been making big strides in pursuing such a mission. At present, it can be said that it’s the biggest school in the Kingdom with its student population touching the four-digit mark.

Lately, the SPIS opened its sister-school in Buraidah, the Philippine International School in Qassim (PISQ), to serve the children of Filipinos in the region. The school operates under the supervision of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Education, Qassim Region.

It successfully held its inaugural ceremony and open house (for pre-school, elementary and high school levels) on June 8 at the school site in Faisaliah district, Buraidah. “The expansion is still in accordance with the original vision of giving quality education to the children of OFWs in Qassim,” said SPIS Administrator Josephine Reyes.

She added that the move was inspired by the desire to serve more children of OFWs who are contributing tremendously the motherland with their dollar remittances. “If PISQ succeeds, all efforts in setting it up, not to mention the difficulty of constantly travelling between Riyadh and Qassim, would not be in vain,” she added.

Earlier, the SPIS also opened its computer school in Dubai. The move is still in pursuance of the school’s original goal of doing its share in helping the Philippines produce quality graduates who could compete in the world market.
