JEDDAH, 16 June 2007 — A man, who had disguised himself as a woman in the town of Naeeriya in the Eastern Province, abused officials from the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice and threatened to explode a bomb he had allegedly strapped to himself.

Following a tip off about the man from a member of the public, commission members managed to detain him and handed him over to police for further investigations. “Our officials dealt with the person kindly and asked him why he was sitting in front of a shopping center dressed as a woman,” said Sheikh Turki Al-Shammary, head of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Naeeriya.

“When the man realized he was cornered, he tried to run away and while doing so his abaya fell off... Commission members tried to calm him down but he started abusing them,” the sheikh said, adding that man threatened to explode a bomb that he claimed he had attached to himself.

“Thankfully, when our officials overpowered him they found he wasn’t carrying explosives,” Shammary said. The man is currently being probed by the police.
