Impersonator’s Sentence Upheld

RIYADH, 24 July 2007 — The Cassation Court in Riyadh upheld a sentence issued by a lower court in the capital against a local for impersonating an intelligence officer and for luring a boy into his car for sex, Riyadh Police announced yesterday.

The local was sentenced to ten years imprisonment and 1,500 lashes for the crime. He was sentenced to another six years imprisonment and SR30,000 for impersonating a security officer.

According to police reports a boy (whose age has not been disclosed) had called the Manfooha Police Department in the capital stating that a man riding in a Mercedes approached him while he was in his neighbor’s car and had asked them to present their identification cards, stating that he was an intelligence officer.

“When the man made sure that the boy was not related to the driver, he asked him to get out of the car and get into his car,” the statement from the Riyadh police said. “The man had the intention of having sex with the boy.”

In another incident, Riyadh Police announced that it has arrested a Saudi citizen, aged 27, for cheating citizens and residents in used car markets. The police said that man used to convince people to sell their cars for less than market value through deceptive means and then turn the vehicles around for profit.

“The Naseem Police Department received numerous calls about a man who was tricking people in the used car market,” a statement from the Riyadh Police said. “Riyadh police set an ambush and was able to arrest him while he was trying to fool a resident to sell him his car.”

The man had tricked 12 locals and residents in several used car markets in the capital using different methods, the police said. The man is currently in police custody and will be transferred to a religious court to be tried according to Shariah law.
