SHARJAH, 29 July 2007 — Dubai Taxi Agency yesterday decided to set the maximum speed limit of 120 kmph on highways for all taxis operating in Dubai.
In order to ensure implementation, effectiveness and accuracy of complying with this decision, Abdul Aziz Malik, CEO of Dubai Taxi Agency of the Roads and Transport Agency (RTA) stated that a system to set maximum speed limits is now in place in all taxi vehicles operating in Dubai, to work beside the existing satellite monitoring system. Moreover, it has been coordinated with car-manufacturing companies that the speed limit of new vehicles to be supplied will be set in advance.
“It was made clear that actions will be taken against violating drivers as per the applicable rules and regulations,” said Malik. “Implementation of the decision started on March 1 following installation of the required systems in all taxi vehicles.
Through this decision, the Dubai Taxi Agency aims to ensure the highest level of safety for all users of Dubai roads. The agency is keen to take into consideration the public feedback, as it considers the public as partner in developing its business and upgrading its services. Additionally, the decision encourages all categories of the community to use public transport and view it as a suitable alternative.
In order to implement this decision in an accurate and transparent manner, the Dubai Taxi Agency has recently launched awareness campaigns targeting drivers and exhorting them to respond positively. Such campaigns included awareness lectures to explain the mechanism of the decision and the underlying objectives. Focus was made on the importance of complying with the traffic regulations in order to enhance safety of passengers and drivers. Drivers were briefed on the punishments to be taken against offending drivers.
Posters and signboards were displayed in various parts of the agency premises and drivers’ accommodation. Signboards were also displayed at the main gates and outlets of the agency in order to remind drivers of the importance of abiding by the decision before setting off to work everyday.
