DAMMA, 28 August 2007M — “Amshah bint Ammash” is a Saudi comedy that raises the social issue of discrimination against women, particularly focusing on the sensitive issue of women driving, a right beyond the reach of women in Saudi Arabia.
The TV show, directed by Saeed Bashir Hawari, also depicts the details of the daily life of average Saudis from a new perspective in a hilarious style.
Young Amshah, the main character, is compelled to get a job and support her family, following the death of her father. Unable to get a job in the government or private sector, Amshah decides to disguise herself as a man and becomes a taxi driver named Sameer.
Though her ailing mother is extremely upset about her job, she is unable to do anything as there are several mouths to feed in the family.
Amshah’s double role lands her in several strange but hilarious situations while in the company of other taxi drivers on one hand and with her friends and relatives on the other.
The show is, obviously, an attempt to convey in a satirical manner the message that if women were allowed to drive it would be a great relief for families who do not have a male member and cannot afford the luxury of hiring drivers. The show will be aired in Ramadan on LBC.
