JEDDAH, 6 September 2007 — The Women’s Higher Committee for Social and Humanitarian Services in the Makkah Region, led by Princess Sarah Al-Angari, announced yesterday it has finalized accommodation projects to build low-income housing for poor, rural families.

The 20,000-square-meter, SR16 million project includes the construction of 50 family-sized four bedroom, four-bathroom units. Al-Angari said that by the end of this project the committee would have completed building 675 residential units out of a goal of 1,000 units in the recent phase. The group has spent SR300 million to execute model residential compounds in rural areas of the Western Region, including Al-Tufail, Khulais, Rabigh, Al-Khuwar, Mudraka, Al-Jamoum and Qunfudha.

“The committee has cooperated with the Ministry of Social Affairs in the Makkah Region in doing a survey that would help in ending random development and gives the needy model housing instead,” said the princess, who is the president of the committee.

The committee says that the Makkah Region alone is in immediate need of approximately 14,000 low-income residential units.

Suad Abbas Taher, the director of the committee, said that 135 residential units comprising 40,000 square meters of land, have been given to low-income individuals and families in Nakhal Village in Qunfudha and Mudraka Village in Al-Jamoum at a cost of SR36 million. The projects have benefited more than 3,500 residents.

“Voluntary work creates the feeling of mercy and kindness among members of the society,” said Al-Angari. “This is led by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah who cares about the happiness and stability of his nation and people.”
