MANAMA, 13 October 2007 — The total money in circulation in Bahrain has reached an all-time high of a daily record to BD310.6 million on Wednesday. This compared with BD275.7 million worth of money in circulation on Oct. 22, 2006, which was the day before Eid Al-Fitr last year, the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) announced on Thursday.
CBB has contributed its share to make the Eid colorful by issuing an additional BD19.3, both in the form of new currency notes and coins on the occasion. Central Bank is issuing new currency notes and coins worth BD19.3 million.
Of the new currency being issued, BD19 million is in notes and BD347,000 in coins. Of the new notes, BD11 million are being released in the BD20 denomination, BD3.5 million in BD10 notes, BD1.75 million in a BD5 denomination, BD1.60 million in BD1 notes and BD 1.15 million in a 500-fil denomination.
Of the coins, BD204,000 worth of coins is being released in a 100-fil denomination, BD99,000 in 50-fil coins, BD29,400 in a 25-fil denomination, BD11,880 in 10-fil coins and BD3,150 in a 5-fil denomination. “Traditionally, the demand for new notes and coins increases in the run-up to the eid celebrations, particularly Eid Al-Fitr,” said Farid Zubari, CBB director, currency issue.
The increase in currency in circulation during Ramadan this year has been 13.3 percent, or BD36.5 million. Money in circulation on the first day of Ramadan, Sept. 13, stood at BD274.2 million.
