MADINAH, 3 December 2007 — In what seemed like a punishment inspired by the party game “musical chairs,” a high school principal who was fed up warning students to bring absentee notes, took a more practical method to crack down on truancy. The daily Okaz reported yesterday that the principal took away the chairs of students who showed up at school without an absentee note. The students were forced to stand during the entire school day until they either brought an absentee note signed by a parent or confessed to playing truant. Soon word of the principal’s unconventional punishment method spread among students and teachers observed a decline in absences.
Bride Asks for House, Gets Divorce Instead
AHSA, 3 December 2007 — A 60-year-old groom divorced his 35-year-old bride after only five hours of marriage, the daily Al-Yaum reported yesterday. The joyous occasion came to a crashing end after the bride made a request for a house to be given to her just hours after the couple had wed. She claimed she needed a house in her name in order to “secure her future.” Her request didn’t go well with the groom who wasted no time in calling and informing his father-in-law about the divorce. The groom accused the bride of being greedy and saying she only married him for his money. A blissful day ended on a sour note for the bride.
