RIYADH, 31 December 2007 — A large number of people attended funeral prayers for the late Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, Abdullah Al-Ahmar, at Imam Turki ibn Abdullah Mosque here yesterday.
Crown Prince Sultan, Prince Miteb, minister of municipal and rural affairs, Riyadh Gov. Prince Salman and Deputy Gov. Prince Sattam joined the prayers.
Others in attendance were Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh, the Kingdom’s grand mufti and Yemeni Ambassador Mohammed Ali Al-Ahwal and Al-Ahmar’s sons Sadik, Humaid, Hussein, Hashim, Hamdan and Qahtan.
After the prayer, Prince Sultan conveyed his condolences to the government and people of Yemen and to Al-Ahmar’s sons.
Al-Ahmar, 74, died of cancer at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh on Saturday. He will be buried in Sanaa today.
Al-Ahmar played a significant role in the signing of a landmark border treaty between Saudi Arabia and Yemen in June 2000. The treaty opened a new era in Saudi-Yemeni relations.
