JEDDAH, 12 January 2008 — The Marine Sciences College at the King Abdulaziz University (KAU) launched a Marine Sports Club on Tuesday on the coast of south Obhur. “This is an educational and entertainment club at the same time, serving university students and faculty members first. It is also open to the public for free,” said Dr. Abdullah Mohorjy, dean of students’ affairs at KAU.
The club also hosts a special schedule for people wanting to be trained on different marine sports. Mohorjy said the club would hold competitions for KAU’s colleges (faculties) in diving, rowing, fishing and jet-ski racing.
“We will later hold competitions between Saudi universities in the Kingdom,” he added. The opening also included jet ski, diving, rowing and water skiing displays.
Within the next three months, the club will start to hold contests with a sailing boat competition. Next year, it will host long-distance swimming contests (3km or 5km), which will be organized by the Saudi Arabian Swimming Federation. The club also hopes to host championships.
