Although we truly believe in the achievements security authorities have accomplished in fighting terrorism and the efforts they have put in to preserve public security by combating crime, we have to admit that there’s still inade-quacy in some areas. The increase in the number of security personnel and operations doesn’t add up to an increase in the number of crimes and violations, let alone the incompetence of security personnel.

It is evident that there’s a lack of training that is essential to fight organized crime. We also need to understand that security authorities shouldn’t bear the responsibility alone. Others, such as the Ministry of Commerce, must be involved in taking the responsibility. For example, citizens are complaining of the lack of monitoring of prices and of very little protection to the consumer.

Also, unemployment is compounding the problem. Lack of qualifications among young men and women increases the number of unemployed people.

Unemployment brings about poverty and leads to excessive spare time. Undoubtedly, all these factors shake stability and add burdens to the shoulders of the authorities.

Islam teaches us that the absence of supervision and religion creates corruption. Many people see that the increase in the prices of life’s necessities and other things such as cars, tools, machines and home equipment increases the suffering of those with limited incomes and swells the ranks of poor people. It widens the gap between different segments of society and makes the underprivileged bitter, which eventually makes them feel crushed.

What’s more dangerous is that the huge gap between the rich and the poor makes the latter group feel frustrated and desperate which will eventually affect their morals and behavior. They will begin to think that theft and similar crimes are permitted to help them survive their circumstances.

Poverty is never an excuse to commit a crime. Our society is going through so many dangerous social and moral changes that shouldn’t be linked to the economic situation. Our ancestors went through stages of poverty, starving and lack of services and yet they managed to stick to their principles and morals. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that people with faith in God never steal or commit crimes.
