1 Terabyte Becoming the Standard

According to IDC, demand for storage capacity continues to grow at an annual rate of nearly 60 percent. This means data centers must deploy high capacity disk drives to meet this requirement. Now Samsung has brought to market its new F1 RAID Class 3.5” SATA hard drive featuring 1 terabyte (TB) of capacity — 1,000 gigabytes.

Offering the world’s highest recording density using only three platters and running at 7,200rpm, the F1R drive is designed for demanding applications such as database, e-mail servers, web servers, surveillance, call center and nearline/backup storage systems. The Spinpoint F1R provides a mean time between failure (MTBF) of up to 1.2 million hours. The new F1R also offers enterprise class features such as command completion time limit and vibration tolerance. It’s designed with a 16 or 32MB cache, a Serial ATA 3.0Gbps interface, a 175MB/s maximum media transfer rate, and NCQ for random I/O performance.

Download the ‘Social Web Browser’

Over the years Internet browsers haven’t changed much, but what’s out there on the Net and the way we use it, has evolved. So it’s time to consider dumping your old browser in favor of Flock. Internet users spend a lot of time going from one site to the next, keeping up with a variety of friends and interests. Flock pulls all of your favorite people, places and content together in one window and delivers a more personal experience of the web.

Flock is being called, “the Social Web Browser.” It’s free to download and use and is available for Mac, PC and Linux at www.Flock.com. Flock does everything that other browsers do but makes using different social-networking sites a singular experience. Flock’s new version features useful updates to some of the built-in services, along with integration for Web mail and Google’s Picasa.

Environmentally-Responsible Patents Online

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and IBM are initiating an effort in partnership with Nokia, Pitney Bowes and Sony to unleash dozens of innovative, environmentally-responsible patents to the public domain. The pledged portfolio, dubbed the “Eco-Patent Commons,” is available to the public at www.wbcsd.org/web/epc.

Availability of these patents will encourage researchers, entrepreneurs and companies of all sizes in any industry to create, apply and further develop their consumer or industrial products, processes and services in a way that will help to protect and respect the environment. Patents pledged to the Eco-Patent Commons feature innovations focused on environmental matters and innovations in manufacturing or business processes where the solution provides an environmental benefit.

Membership in the Eco-Patent Commons is open to all individuals and companies pledging one or more patents.

Scanners Can Still Be Handy

Many people are switching to digital photography and e-mail is ubiquitous, so why would you still want a scanner? Mostly because new scanners have some super features. HP Middle East has brought two new scanners to the region — with either machine retailing at about SR300.

The simple three-button front panel of the HP Scanjet G2710 Photo Scanner makes it easy to scan, copy and e-mail documents and photos, and the patented HP CCD technology allows for effortless scanning of multiple media types including books, magazines and 3-D objects. The HP Scanjet G2410 Flatbed Scanner is a multimedia scanner which makes it simple to convert images and documents into Microsoft Word and searchable PDF files for digital sharing and storing.
