DHAKA — The opposition Awami League party gave an ultimatum to the military-backed caretaker government yesterday to free detained party President Hasina Wajed and lift the state of emergency by the end of March.
The party threatened to launch a movement if the demands were not met.
Saying that the state of emergency was illegal after 90 days, the party asked the government to lift it immediately. Acting Awami League President Zillur Rahman urged party leaders and workers at a rally held to mark the Martyrs Day to prepare for any movement that could be launched to win Hasina’s freedom.
Hasina was taken to a Dhaka hospital yesterday for treatment for high blood pressure and other complaints, officials said.
The former premier, who went on trial last month accused of accepting $440,000 in kickbacks on a power plant deal during her time in office, was later taken back to jail after a check-up and medication.
“She will get treatment as per advice of the doctors at the prison,” a Home Ministry official said.
