RIYADH, 28 February 2008 — Indian expatriates have set up a social forum “Association for Humanitarian Services And Solidarity” (AHSAS), which will work to foster brotherhood and promote education and literacy among the poor back home.
The forum was formally launched at a ceremony here. AHSAS President Wakil Ahmed and Treasurer Neyaz Ahmed spoke about the aims and objectives of the forum. AHSAS will be a community-based network focusing on educational and literacy initiatives. Its mission will be to assist poor students, check dropouts and help them continue their studies.
“AHSAS is committed to serving the underprivileged people in India in general and people living in the eastern states of Bihar and Jharkhand in particular,” said Wakil. On the occasion, a website — www.ahsasforyou.com — was also launched to enable Indian expatriates to enlist themselves with the forum and to contribute to the cause.
More than 100 senior community members, comprising many top professionals attended the event. There are more than 100,000 Indian workers in Saudi Arabia, who hail from the eastern states of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Those, who attended the event, also discussed how to integrate weaker section into the mainstream of society. Saudi Arabia is home to over 1.7 million Indian expatriates.
