RIYADH, 14 April 2008 — The Kingdom Hospital and Consulting Clinics (KHCC) is organizing an osteoporosis early detection campaign this month with the pharmaceutical giant Merck Sharp & Dohme Idea Inc.
The campaign includes a free primary osteoporosis checkup using ultrasound techniques for visitors.
“This campaign is based on the KHCC’s commitment to extend full support to medical initiatives and programs. We consider such initiatives and programs part of our day-to-day responsibilities. Effective participation in educating society will certainly benefit both individuals and the hospital,” said Dr. Rashad Ghassan Haddad, general supervisor of the campaign and head of obstetrics and gynecology at KHCC.
Haddad said that modern lifestyles have caused osteoporosis to become a major problem in the Kingdom. “Osteoporosis is known as the silent disease. It exacerbates without obvious symptoms over the years. The first symptom could be a fracture in the pelvis, spinal column, forearm or shoulder, which would result in severe pain combined with loss of ability to move or disability,” he added.
“Preventing risks of catching the disease includes regular exercises, appropriate and balanced diet, increasing intake of foods rich in calcium and vitamin D, quitting smoking and alcohol and regular follow-up with a competent doctor,” he said.
