JEDDAH, 21 May 2008 — Reigning GCC champions Al-Ahli handball team landed their first title of the domestic season, beating Al-Nour 34-25 in the final of the Prince Sultan ibn Fahd Cup in Al-Qatif on Monday.
Ahli lost the Saudi Super League final against Al-Nour 25-23 but managed to win the GCC Handball Championship for clubs which the Kingdom hosted recently.
Saudi Handball Federation President Salman Al-Sudairi attended the final match on behalf of the General Presidency of Youth Welfare Preident Prince Sultan ibn Fahd.
It was Ahli’s third straight victory having won the 2007 and 2006 editions of the tournament. They beat Al-Wehda 23-18 and Al-Qadisia 16-15 in the 2007 and 2006 finals respectively. On their way to the title, Ahli downed Mudar 23-20 in the semifinals and Wehda 25-23 in the quarterfinals.
In the title game against Al-Nour, Ahli raced to an 18-9 first half lead.
Ahli were in control in the second half with only token resistance coming from Al-Nour. “It had been one of the best leagues and we look forward to also win the next one which is the Al-Knohbah championship because it is more exciting especially with the cash prizes on offer,” said Bandar Al-Harbi of Ahli.
