Al-Ghamdi new Shoura secretary

JEDDAH: Muhammad ibn Abdullah Al-Ghamdi has been appointed new secretary-general of the Shoura Council, the Saudi Press Agency reported yesterday. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah made the appointment in a royal decree, it said.

Sauna fire forces hotel evacuation

JEDDAH: More than 150 guests were recently evacuated from Jeddah’s Trident Hotel following a fire in the hotel’s sauna. Capt. Abdullah Al-Amri, spokesman for the Civil Defense, said no one was injured and that all the guests at the 14-story hotel were promptly evacuated. He added that the fire was caused by high temperature at the sauna. Al-Amri praised the Health Affairs for cooperating with the Civil Defense in alerting three local hospitals in case of injuries as soon as news of the fire was received.

Drug peddler assaults cop

JEDDAH: Police arrested a Sudanese drug dealer who sped off on a motorcycle after being stopped at a checkpoint. Mesfer Al-Juaid, spokesman for Jeddah police, said the man assaulted an officer during his arrest and that his identity is unknown. He added that the man was found in possession of a fake Saudi ID card and was taken to a police station for questioning.
