ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmud Qureshi yesterday left here for New York to take up Pakistan’s request with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for a UN probe into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Bhutto was assassinated in a terrorist attack after addressing a public rally in Rawalipindi on Dec. 27. The request to help probe her murder had already been submitted by Islamabad’s permanent representative to UN Ambassador Munir Akram to the secretary-general, which was being reviewed by the UN Office of Legal Affairs.

Pakistan’s request for the UN probe is in line with the aspirations expressed in the unanimous resolutions adopted by the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies. The minister will also hold talks with permanent representatives of the UN Security Council member countries on this issue. He will also address a UN Council meeting on Afghanistan on July 9.
