JEDDAH: The Jeddah Municipality has established an emergency telephone line for receiving complaints from citizens and residents concerning food poisoning and decomposition that increase during summer. The emergency phone number is 940.
Mahmoud Kansara, assistant undersecretary at the municipality for markets and foodstuffs, said special squads had been set up to inspect shopping centers, tourist resorts, chalets and recreation centers after receiving complaints about contaminated food.
A committee has been set up to look into foodstuffs such as meat, poultry, fish and dairy products that decompose quickly as a result of high temperatures while another committee has been formed to inspect warehouses and supermarkets in order to check storage facilities and expiry dates. “Our officials have been provided with equipment to enable them to check the temperature at warehouses and cold-storages as well as the expiry dates of meat and poultry products,” Kansara said.
He said squads would check restaurant workers engaged in preparing food to ensure they followed hygiene rules.
