DUBAI: The condition of a Sudanese mother, who allegedly killed her twin newborn babies last Sunday, is deteriorating, as she has stopped eating, said an official from the Sudanese Consulate in Dubai.
The woman is accused of killing her 20-day-old twin girls by lying on top of them and suffocating them. A spokesman for the Sudanese Consulate said the mission is offering her full consular support and has visited her in prison.
According to investigators, the woman is still in shock and has not uttered a word since that day.
An autopsy has been performed on the twins’ bodies. The police, however, refused to divulge the results. According to sources, the woman’s relationship with her husband became strained after he suspected her of infidelity.
The husband, who is also a Sudanese national, told investigators that his wife of seven years had gone to live in Sudan a few years ago because of financial reasons.
The woman had also taken with her their first-born daughter, who is now seven. When the husband’s financial situation improved, he rented a house in Um Al-Quwain, which is located one hour from Dubai and is popular among low-income families.
After not seeing each other for several years, the family was reunited five months ago. However, around three weeks ago the woman began suffering pains and was taken to hospital where she gave birth to twins. The husband, as a result, was left surprised as he felt the twins were not his.
The man told authorities that he had refused to expose his wife’s infidelity, as the two girls were innocent and that he could not ruin their lives. However, the relationship between the couple became strained and the husband moved into a separate bedroom. The woman then became depressed.
On the day of the incident, the woman locked herself in her bedroom and refused to open the door. The woman’s oldest daughter and her brother-in-law, who lived with the family, knocked on the door but she did not answer. They called the husband, who returned from work, and with the help of neighbors broke the door open. They found the mother lying on top of the babies, who had died by then.
