DUBAI: A Saudi national was stabbed to death by a Bangladeshi cleaner on the mistaken belief that he had cash and valuables in his apartment. All that the alleged murderer got for his pains was a measly camera.
Col. Khalil Al-Mansouri, director of the Criminal Intelligence Department at the Dubai Police, said the victim's friend informed them of the killing.
The 52-year-old victim had been living alone in the emirate, he added. "The victim's friend got worried after knocking on the door several times with no answer. He suspected foul play after realizing that the air-conditioner was on," he said.
When the police forced open the apartment's door they found the victim's body drenched in blood near his bedroom.
"The victim had been stabbed several times and it seemed he had put up a fight before he was overpowered," said the colonel. "The apartment had been ransacked and there was signs that the killer had been searching for something. The killer had thoroughly searched the apartment and had even slit open the suitcases looking for valuables."
Because there were no signs of forced entry, police suspected that the victim knew his killer.
"We started searching the immediate vicinity to the crime area," said the colonel. "When we were questioning supermarket workers in the area we saw that one of them had a bandage on his arm. We searched his home and found the weapon, his blood-drenched shoes and socks, in addition to a camera he had stolen from the apartment. The accused broke down when we questioned him and confessed that he had committed the crime."
Noor Ahmad, 20, told the police that the Saudi man had hired him twenty days earlier to clean his flat. The night of the murder was the second time the alleged killer had come to clean the apartment.
