GAZA CITY/DAMASCUS: The Islamist movement Hamas yesterday denied that its political supremo Khaled Meshaal had moved from his self-imposed exile in Syria to Sudan. “The movement totally denies media reports saying that Khaled Meshaal has left Syria for Sudan,” a Hamas official said in a statement. “These reports are false.”

Hamas denied reports that the movement’s Damascus-based Meshaal had moved his office from Syria to Sudan. The movement asserted that the relations between Hamas and Syria are still strong. “Such reports are inaccurate and untrue ... our relations with Syria are strategic and deep,” senior Hamas leader in Gaza Ismail Redwan said in a written statement sent to the press.

Al-Rai newspaper quoted well-informed Palestinian sources as saying that the move was part of a secret deal between Meshaal and the Syrian authorities.
