JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah yesterday received an honorary doctorate degree from King Saud University (KSU) in Riyadh and emphasized his support for nano technology.
“I am waiting for nano technology ... and every day I want to hear new developments in the field,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted the king as saying after receiving the degree from the Kingdom’s oldest university.
King Abdullah had approved the establishment of an institute for nano technology at KSU. Four of its faculty members are Nobel laureates. Nano technology sales in the world are expected to reach $3 trillion by 2015.
Higher Education Minister Khaled Al-Anqari and KSU President Abdullah Al-Othman conferred on the king the university’s medal, sash and gown during a ceremony at the Royal Court in Riyadh. Al-Anqari said the honorary degree was awarded in appreciation of King Abdullah’s remarkable contributions to the development of higher education in the Kingdom and his unlimited support for the university. “As a result of this support, KSU has achieved advanced position in international ranking of universities,” he said.
The minister thanked the king for accepting the honorary degree and praised him for opening new universities and colleges, providing wider opportunities for Saudi men and women to obtain higher education. The King Abdullah Scholarship Program enabled a large number of Saudi students to pursue higher studies at reputable institutions abroad.
