RAMALLAH, West Bank: Jewish occupiers yesterday attacked Palestinians in the West bank city of Hebron and called for retaliation against the Israeli security forces after the army dismantled a rogue outpost on Saturday night.
A Palestinian eyewitness said angry occupiers slashed tires of dozens of cars and stoned several Palestinian homes. They also vandalized graves, breaking some headstones and spray-painted some with slogans against Arabs and Muslims.
Israeli sources said that the occupiers attacked soldiers who were sent to quell the disturbance in Hebron that was sparked when Israeli security forces were sent to dismantle the home of extreme right-wing activist Noam Federman on the outskirts of Hebron and Kiryat Arba settlement.
Hagit Ofran of Israeli Peace Now organization, which monitors settlement and outpost activities in Palestinian territories, said that the Israeli High Court had ruled over a year ago that the outpost was illegal and had ordered the occupiers to leave. “It is an important move and this means that the government is taking seriously the violation of the law by settlers,” said Ofran. Some of the occupiers said that a terrorist attack should be launched against the armed forces in retaliation.
The development came a day after around 600 officers of Palestinian security forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas deployed in Hebron to restore order in the city.
