DUBAI: A global conference on the environment in Dubai next week will discuss the sources of air pollution and its effects on health. The conference titled, “EnviroCities 2008 International Conference — Sources and Health Effects of Air Pollution: Knowledge to Practice,” will be held from Nov. 11 to 13.

Topics such as the Effects of Long-Term Exposure to (traffic-related) Air Pollution on Cause-Specific Mortality will be discussed with a panel of experts, followed by the audience interaction session where everyone can freely discuss and present their questions to the speakers.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, acting director general of Dubai Municipality, said the impact of human activity on the environment took numerous forms, many of which have been well publicized. In recent years, environmental degradation has become one of increasing concern. Two factors account for this: Consumption of resources and the production of waste, whether solid, liquid or gaseous.

“Dubai government not only cares about the health effects of the environmental issues we face today, but it has also taken a step further to help the people and the policymakers alike to know more about the causes and effects of air pollution and the possible steps we all can take together as responsible citizens and governments,” he said.

Radhiya Al-Hashimi, director of the Environmental Center for Arab Towns said the Environmental Center for Arab Towns has joined hands with the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) to bring together a panel of the best environmental and health experts from all over the world to share with us their life-time experience on the health effects of air pollutants.
