YANBU: Amid an atmosphere of eagerness in the business community in and around the western port city of Yanbu, a total of 1,600 voters, including 93 businesswomen, will vote today to choose eight candidates for the new board of directors of the Yanbu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (YCCI).

The chamber has a 12-member board — four positions will be appointed by the minister of commerce.

The final list of candidates announced by the chamber’s Election Committee included, for the first time in the history of the chamber, a woman candidate: Alawiyah bint Abdul Fattah Munqal, who is involved in a business that provides food services to public schools, said she would do her best to serve all businesswomen in the area.

All the candidates have expressed their determination to make real accomplishments through hard labor and dedicated efforts.

Khaled Salman Al-Sahali, secretary-general of the chamber, said the winners would work together to consolidate the principles of Shoura (consultation) and upgrade the services provided by the chamber to make a real forum for the commercial and industrial sectors in the region.

“The new board members will make concerted efforts to promote the resources of the chamber to be able to expand its services and activities,” he added.

He said the casting and counting of votes would be done electronically and the results would be announced immediately after the closure of voting.

“Votes will be cast on special ballot papers that will be completed using styluses,” he said.

Al-Sahali said the casting of votes would be done over two morning and evening sessions and the voters would choose five businessmen and three industrialists.

“Any ballot paper containing more than eight names will be discarded,” he warned.

He asked the voters to come to chamber in person carrying with them the invitation card, their civil IDs, their trade license and their YCCI membership card.

“Each voter will have one vote no matter how many establishments he owns,” Al-Sahali pointed out.
