SAMSUNG Electronics maintained its lead in the Global TV market riding on strong demand for its LCD TV and PDP TV products, despite the global economic recession. According to industry research firm Display Search, Samsung recorded sales of 8.94 million TV units with revenue of $6.47 billion in the third quarter of 2008. This made Samsung the global brand share leader in revenues for the eleventh straight quarter, holding their revenue share nearly unchanged at 22.5 percent, more than nine points higher than number two Sony.
Samsung's 36 percent year on year growth was the strongest among the top five brands. Sony was second on a revenue basis for the fifth straight quarter and had the second strongest quarter on quarter growth among the top five, picking up about a point of share from Q2 to Q3. LGE remained in third place even though their share was down about half a point to 10.9 percent on a revenue basis. Fourth place on the list went to Panasonic, with an 8.6 percent share, and Sharp rounded out the top five with 8 percent of the market.
Samsung became the first company to capture 5.39 million units sold and 20.2 percent of the market share for LCD televisions. For 2008, Samsung has now sold more than 14.36 million LCD TVs through the third quarter. To break down the Q3 market share in the world LCD TV market, Samsung topped it with a 20.2 percent share followed by Sony (13.8 percent), Sharp (10.2 percent), LG (9.3 percent) and Philips (7.0 percent).
“Amid the aggravating global market environment Samsung recorded the highest quarterly sales performance in the LCD TV market on the back of differentiated products and various marketing activities. Also, we expect to smoothly achieve the annual sales goal of 20 million units this year,” said Chiwon Suh, president of Samsung’s Middle East & Africa Headquarters.
In the Middle East and Africa, Samsung continues their leadership trend by maintaining the number one position in sales revenue for televisions with 30.59 percent market share. For Saudi Arabia, Samsung was number one in the LCD TV market with a 41 percent market share.
