JEDDAH: An Indonesian maid threatened to commit suicide by jumping from the balcony of a fourth-floor apartment in Jeddah in protest against physical abuse by her Saudi employer, police said yesterday.
Col. Misfar Al-Juaid, spokesman for the Jeddah police, said officers arrived at the scene after receiving information from an Indonesian expatriate that a maid was threatening to jump from a balcony. “Officers were able to pacify her and talk her out of the act,” he said.
“The woman was trying to kill herself because her Saudi employer and her two daughters were physically abusing her,” he said.
“She was taken to hospital where bruises were discovered on her body. Officers are questioning the sponsor who is in her 80s and her two daughters who are 50 and 35,” he added.
