DAMASCUS: Syrian President Bashar Assad yesterday held talks with Saudi intelligence chief Prince Muqrin, who according to the Saudi Press Agency conveyed a verbal message from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to the Syrian leader.

“Prince Muqrin also conveyed to the president the greetings of King Abdullah, who wished the Syrian people greater progress and prosperity,” the agency said.

This is the first encounter between Assad and a senior Saudi official after King Abdullah initiated reconciliation between Arab leaders at a regional summit in Kuwait last month.

In an inspiring speech during the summit, King Abdullah called for a new era of Arab unity and solidarity. “We have overcome the period of disunity, opening the door of Arab brotherhood, and that of unity for all Arabs without exception or reservation, and we will face the future with total unity and without any discord,” the king said.
