MANAMA: A Pakistani man who sustained severe burns after his pickup was attacked by unidentified youths earlier this month died in hospital yesterday.

Sheikh Mohammed Reyadh was battling for his life since being admitted to the Salmaniya Medical Complex. Doctors pronounced him dead at 10 a.m. yesterday after his condition worsened.

A group of unidentified men hurled Molotov cocktails at the 58-year-old worker who was on his way to his accommodation in Ma’ameer village on March 7.

The authorities have arrested Reyadh’s attackers; they could face life imprisonment if convicted, according to the island’s criminal law. This is the first civilian death in ongoing violence on the island. Earlier, policeman Majid Asghar Ali, also a Pakistani national, died when his patrol vehicle was attacked in Karzakkan village.

“We will take the body to Pakistan for burial. Those who killed my father should be punished,” said his son, Amjad.Reyadh worked for a private holding company for 15 years and was in Saudi Arabia before being posted to Bahrain. He hailed from Jehlum district of Pakistan’s Punjab province and leaves behind his wife, three boys and two girls.

Sporadic unrest has hit Bahrain this year with regular reports of attacks on expatriates and locals.
