TABUK: A number of committees have been set up to study ways of improving the economic conditions of people in the Kingdom, with particular focus on the northern region, according to Mufleh Al-Qahtani, chairman of the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR).

“The NSHR has been watching the economic condition of people in the Kingdom in general and in the northern region in particular. It has succeeded in persuading several government departments to set up committees to study and find quick solutions to issues affecting people,” Al-Qahtani said while speaking to the media following the signing of an agreement between the NSHR and Tabuk University on Thursday.

The NSHR and the university will conduct joint studies on issues pertaining to certain regions, Al-Qahtani said.

“The biggest problem the nation confronts today is the inefficiency of some government departments, which take months to remedy problems that only require one or two days to solve,” Al-Madinah newspaper quoted Al-Qahtani as saying.

He attributed the unwelcome situation to the incompetence or lack of authority of officials handling cases. He also emphasized the need for government officials and citizens to be fully aware of their rights and obligations.

While stressing the need for concerted efforts by administrative departments in solving people’s problems, the NSHR official lauded the joint efforts of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education to set up a higher commission to study issues related to their departments.

He said the NSHR plans to sign agreements with other Saudi universities as part of efforts to chalk out nongovernmental ways to help the developmental process.

“Such agreements would help the NSHR, which is concerned with social progress, make a rapport with research institutions in finding solutions to various problems,” he said.

Universities with which the NSHR will sign agreements with include Taiba University, King Abdulaziz University and Prince Naif University.
