NEW DELHI: Spelling some relief for Varun Gandhi and his party, the Supreme Court yesterday ordered his release on parole for two weeks. Varun, Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate for Lok Sabha polls from Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh, courted arrest last month after several charges were filed against him for making inflammatory remarks while campaigning.

The UP government slapped National Security Act (NSA) against him and shifted him to Etah jail for “security” reasons. Varun turned to apex court, seeking bail and also questioning the NSA slapped against him.

Though the case is still in its initial stages, the Supreme Court bench ordered his release on the undertaking that he will not make any speech provoking communal disturbances. The case will come up for second hearing after two weeks. During the period of parole, Varun will not disturb public sentiments, the judges said.
