Wii mows the hillside
The University of Southern Denmark has found a new use for the Nintendo Wii remote controller. A robotics team at the university has interfaced the “Wiimote” with its Computer Assisted Slope Mowing Robot or Casmobot module. This enables a slope mower to be controlled at a distance. Such mowers are used in agricultural and mountainous areas for weed and grass management.
The idea started out as a joke one late Friday afternoon in the university's robotics laboratory. But soon nobody was laughing. The Wiimote turned out to be a more intuitive way to control the slope mower, instead of using a standard industrial remote control unit, especially for people who hadn't tried steering larger remote controlled vehicles before. Manual steering of the slope mower is performed by simply tilting the Wiimote in the direction that the operator wants the vehicle to drive. Learn more about it at www.fieldrobot.dk.
