JEDDAH: Mayor of Jeddah Adel Fakieh and Mohammed Jameel, executive president of Bab Rizq Jameel (BRJ), opened 22 stalls run by women in the city’s Al-Safa district on Tuesday night.
The mayor said the public park behind Al-Murjan Market in Al-Safa was the best location for the stalls, which were designed with the help of BRJ, an initiative by Abdul Latif Jameel Company to create job opportunities for Saudis.
He said the municipality, the BRJ and the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry held many meetings to find a solution for women who sell their products on the sidewalks in front of the Al-Murjan Market.
He said names of women selling items on the sidewalk were taken and then they were given the stalls in a public lottery at the municipality’s headquarters.
“This initiative is part of the ongoing partnership between the public and private sectors,” the mayor said.
Jameel said the initiative was part of BRJ programs that aim at creating job opportunities and supporting small businesses as part of ALJ’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program.
In another welcome development, the municipality has opened a window at its headquarters to serve people with special needs who require municipal services. The new window will facilitate for these segment of society all procedures that are available at 39 other service windows, said Mohammed Qattan, head of the Public Service Department.
Officials have been trained to deal with special-needs people in order to achieve maximum efficiency and ease of work.
