MADINAH: A Saudi Arabian Airlines plane aborted take-off from Prince Muhammad Airport in Madinah yesterday after the pilot detected two of the plane’s rear tires had been damaged as a result of an overheated brake system.

“Flight No. SV1476 was canceled just before take-off,” said Abdul Hameed Abalarry, spokesman of the General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA).

The MD90 carrying 83 passengers was on a scheduled flight to Riyadh’s King Khaled International Airport.

Abalarry said the tire blast happened at 11:50 a.m. as a result of an increase in temperature in the aircraft’s brake system.

“The pilot informed air traffic control that he was aborting take-off due to overheated brakes,” the spokesman said, adding that another aircraft was arranged to carry the passengers to Riyadh.

No one was injured in the incident, Abalarry said, adding that an investigation has been launched into the cause of the tire blasts.
