DULAM: It’s final-exam time in Saudi Arabia, which means the local press is filled with reports of the escapades of the pupils as they work their way through the dreaded week of testing prior to the freedom of summer vacation. One daily newspaper reported yesterday a student in this small town north of Taif studied all night and decided to take a nap in his car outside of school. He must have been exhausted because he, of course, overslept. A teacher who happened to pass by woke him. The student panicked until the forgiving school principal decided to allow him to sit his exams.

Eight-year-old kid held in traffic jail

MAKKAH: A father was incensed when he learned that his eight-year-old child was held in a jail cell pending estimation of the damage inflicted in an accident caused by the family driver. According to yesterday’s Al-Madinah newspaper, the driver was in a fender-bender while picking the child up from school. Realizing the estimation of the damage to the other vehicle would not be ready for a number of hours, the detaining officer decided to hold the driver and the child in a cell until the estimate came back from the mechanic. Embarrassed by the officer’s decision, the police precinct apologized to the father and promised to punish the officer.
