MAKKAH: Car service station owners in Sharaia district of Makkah have been ordered to destroy over 400 car tires past their sell-by date. The tires had been put on sale in spite of regulations preventing their sale.
The discovery was made by a committee of officials from the Traffic Department, the municipality, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and police. The committee, which was formed to inspect car repair and service shops in the holy city, asked shop owners to produce official certificates proving they had destroyed the tires.
Maj. Fawzi Al-Ansari, spokesman for the Traffic Department, said the tires did not have valid dates and were put on sale in gross violation of regulations. “We urge members of the public not to buy used or second hand tires, as they are prone to causing accidents,” said Al-Ansari.
He said the committee would intensify checks, especially during the summer vacation.
