RIYADH: A medical team at King Fahd Medical City succeeded in delivering hope to two women who had suffered for over 20 years with miscarriages, hope in the form of two healthy babies.
“The women were referred to KFMC suffering from recurrent miscarriages which deprived them of enjoying motherhood for many years and made them reach a state of despair,” says Maamoon Al-Awad, OB-GYN and supervisor of the miscarriages clinic at KFMC. After studying their cases and making detailed investigations and lab tests, Al-Awad confirmed the cause of the recurrent miscarriages as small blood clots forming in the placenta during development that causes the death of the embryos.
“The medical plan was to start patients on medication to prevent the formation of the clots to protect the mother and the embryo” says Al-Awad, adding that both mothers were closely monitored throughout treatment until they completed their terms and delivered safely.
Three to five percent of women suffer miscarriages, points out Al-Awad. But recurring miscarriages can be treated with about an 80 percent probability of success. About 30 patients a week are treated at the KFMC miscarriages clinic.
