DSS
Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) 2009’s “Surprising Dubai” campaign has achieved impressive results during the first half of this summer extravaganza, registering increased sales across participating malls throughout the city as well as larger visitor numbers in key destinations. The multi-sectoral initiative led by the Dubai Shopping Festival Office (DFSO) has shown healthy sales-indicators from Dubai’s retail and tourism sectors, defying a global economic slowdown that has dampened retail sales and tourism arrivals in previous months. Laila Suhail, CEO, DSFO, said: “The results are encouraging when viewed in the context of the current global economy. These results affirm not only Dubai’s premiere position as the leading retail and tourism hub of the region, but also strongly enhance the status of DSS as the Middle East’s most influential summer spectacle. More importantly, the success of DSS is helping to restore consumer confidence and will hopefully sustain the momentum of Dubai’s continuing progress.”
JONES LANG LASALLE MEGHRAJ
According to Ramesh Nair, MD (Chennai), Jones Lang LaSalle Meghraj, few cities in India have managed to maintain a more or less even keel in the recent market turbulences, but Chennai definitely numbers among them. Being an essentially conservative market, it has managed to maintain its inherent potential while many other cities showed some rather extreme variations. “Most of the housing demand in Chennai comes from services industries such as IT/ITES. Close to 48 percent of the total non-working population in Chennai falls under the age bracket of 15-59. We foresee a large proportion of this nonworking population to graduate and commence working. This will lead to an increase in the number of double-income-no-kids (DINK) families in Chennai and will result in a rise in housing demand over the same period,” he said, adding, Sriperumbadur is one of Chennai’s key growth areas and a very important manufacturing location and automobile hub in the southern Indian city. Providing the connectivity will also open up Sriperumbadur’s residential sector.
